An explanation of LASIK surgery
61What is LASIK Surgery?
LASIK (laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is a reliable, painless, and safe method of improving your vision, negating the need for contact lenses and glasses. The result of LASIK surgery is that the way that light is refracted through the cornea (hence the term "refractive surgery"), ensuring that it focuses correctly on the retina, thus producing a clear, sharp image.
Prior to the procedure, the patient is administered a light anesthesia, meaning that they will experience no discomfort. Once the eye is anesthetised, a small flap is surgically created in the cornea. This flap is then lifted and the excimer laser is then used to change the curvature of the cornea.
Once the laser treatment is completed, the flap is then closed. This whole procedure usually takes no more than fifteen minutes, and the patient will in most cases be ready to leave the surgery an hour after the surgery.
LASIK provides great benefit to many people with hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism, providing the opportunity to live a life without glasses or copntact lenses.

What results can I expect from LASIK surgery?
LASIK is a procedure which corrects unassisted vision (vision without wearing contact lenses or glasses) in most patients. Generally, 20/40 vision is acheived in 98% of patients with moderate to low myopia, 20/20 vision is acheived in approximately 90% of patients.
Whilst these results are acheivable in most cases, there are no guarantees with LASIK surgery, and your LASIK surgeon will assess you and provide you with the possible outcomes. It is important to understand that you need to have realistic expectations when considering undergoing LASIK surgery.
